Fitness Foundations: Part 4

Accountability and sticking with it.

You’ve almost certainly noticed in the past that when you have other people keeping you accountable, it’s a lot easier to stick with it. Here are some of the best accountability strategies:

Find a Workout Partner

Let’s face it, working out can get lonely sometimes. Having someone who is going to be there at the same time you are is a fantastic motivator. Nobody wants to let anyone down, and if you know that someone else is counting on you, you’re more likely to let go of the excuses and make sure that you follow through on your promise. Not only that, having a partner to work out with can make it a lot more fun! A little friendly conversation (and competition maybe?) can add some enjoyment and sociability to your workout routine.

Try Group Exercise Classes

Variety, fun, music, support… group exercise has it all! In fact, research consistently shows that people who add group fitness classes into their routine are much more likely to not only get better results, but also create stronger friendships and social support systems to keep them on track!

If you’ve been looking for an almost surefire way to create a fitness habit that sticks, this is about as good as it gets.

Ask Friends & Family for Support

Nobody is an island. If you’re making changes, it can help a ton if your friends and family support you in your changes. That doesn’t mean they need to adopt the same lifestyle as you, it just means that they’ll help encourage you and be more understanding that you’re going to be trying some new things. Whether it’s eating a bit healthier or just dedicating more time to your fitness goals, letting your social circle know how they can support you is going to be one of the most important things you can do.

Get a Trainer

It gets pretty hard to no-show when you’ve got a Personal Trainer keeping you accountable. Not only are they making sure that you get results as quickly and safely as possible, but they’re also there to help you tear down any excuses that may have held you back in the past.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to have a drill sergeant for a trainer to get those benefits. An understanding and compassionate trainer will still help hold you accountable to the goals you have for yourself and help you maintain your focus and motivation.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you don’t overlook this part. If you ignore the importance of accountability, you’re much more likely to let the little things slip, and before you know it, you’ve fallen off track and nobody was there to help catch you.

Homework!

Choose at least one new accountability strategy to start right away. Maybe that means calling your best friend and telling them about the changes you’re making. It might mean scheduling a sit down to talk to a trainer. Whatever it is, don’t delay. The sooner you set up an accountability strategy, the more likely you are to stick with it this time.
